The Friends of the Spanish River held their first “Canoe Draw” at the Recreational Complex in Espanola, Ontario on July 1, 2003.

The draw was officiated by Marcel Golec, Chairman of the F.S.R. and the draw was performed by Mr. Ernie Checkeris of Sudbury, Ontario. Mr. Checkeris organized the “Art In The Park” feature of the 2003 Espanola Canada Day celebrations. Ernie is also the former Chairman of the Rainbow District School Board.

 First Prize, a 17’canoe, electric outboard motor, battery, solar battery charger and two paddles, was won by Mr. George Jones of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (see photo of the month).

Second Prize, a 15’ canoe with two paddles was won by Mr. Maurice Gouge of Espanola, Ontario.

The Friends of the Spanish River thank everyone who supported their first canoe draw and helped make the project a success. The funds raised will be used to further “Restore, Preserve and Celebrate our beautiful Spanish River.
