Dear Member:

Thank you for supporting the important environmental work that the Friends of the Spanish River and their partners, Federal, Provincial, Municipal and Industrial are doing to Restore, Preserve and Celebrate the Spanish River.

Some of the highlights of the year 2002 are as follows:

  • The Lower Spanish River Private Buoyage/Public Dockage System, under the leadership of Direction Services, produced a very positive feasibility study result that identified numerous funding sources, contained a complete blueprint for development and maintenance of the system and achieved 100% agreement from all 5 partners to proceed with the project.
  • April 5&6: Attended at Anishinabec/Ontario Fisheries Resource Centre Special Stakeholders Summit that dealt with fisheries issues in and around the Spanish River.
  • May 31: 190 yearling and 5 two year old Musky were stocked in the Spanish River.

  • We assisted with MNR Musky egg collection in late May and early June out of Little Current. No eggs were harvested but we received adequate eggs from the Lake Huron Unit further down the coast. On Nov.7 300 large fall fingerlings were released into the Spanish and 550 were left in Lindsay to winter over and release as yearlings in the spring of 2003.

  • High water levels hampered the spring river clean-up but we were able to do both sides between Espanola and Massey.

  • Our mascot pointer boat was used in the Espanola July 1 parade and in Massey at the Fall Fair Parade August 24. In addition some members rowed the boat from Espanola to Webbwood for a picnic July 3.

  • We did not have a fund-raiser in the year 2002 but will be having a raffle July 1 for 2 canoes. First prize is a Kanuk 17’Trapper (Y stern) with paddles, Minn Kota Electric Motor, Battery&Solar Charger. Second prize is a Kanuk 15’ Hunter with paddles. Tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00.
